CONTACT
New Feeling is structured as a multi-stakeholder cooperative. When you subscribe, you also become a member and co-owner - helping to equitably pay contributors (a growing list of talented music writers across the country!) through dues and shape the organization’s direction through your voting power. One member, one share, one vote.
We know that everyone may have a different reason for joining New Feeling. That’s why we’ve created several membership types, each tailored to particular benefits and roles. We encourage you to choose the membership structure that best suits your capacity and intentions.

PITCH US
New Feeling maintains an up-to-date list of writers that we send out calls for pitches to. If you’re interested in writing for us in the future, add your name to this Google form to be kept up to date about future issue themes and calls for pitches.
Below are some quick tips on pitching for New Feeling.
Formats:
- Features, 1500 words
- Reviews, 150 words
About a Canadian album released within the past year; or, about a Canadian album of a certain vintage that you think is due for a critical reappraisal. We are especially interested in critical takes highlighting overlooked albums. Unlike capsule reviews of recent records, critical reappraisals are typically feature-length. - Scene report, 1500 words
Other tips:
- Do your research! Before sending in your idea, make sure it is the kind of story we would publish. Read through our previous issues and content to get a good sense of what we’re after.
- We like people-centred stories, and ones that bring attention to community-wide issues. We like stories about artists in so-called Canada outside Toronto/Montreal/Vancouver, and stories that have a point of view. Read other stories we’ve published to get a sense of what we are into.
- Show us you’ve researched the topic and idea you’re planning on writing about. If you’re proposing a record review, show us your close knowledge of the artist and the context of their work. If you’re planning to write a feature, what experts will you reach out to for comment?
- Send us your ideas — whether personal, critical, or experimental. Your pitch should tell us about your idea, how it fits/explores the theme, who you want to talk to and why. Don’t feel like you need to pepper the exact theme in your pitch — show us, don’t tell us, how your idea adheres to it. A good pitch gives us a sense of the narrative to your piece, not just the subject. What are you hoping to convey, and how are you going to get there?
- Please do not send us final drafts of your work as a pitch.
- Please do not pitch us ideas that you’ve yet to hear back about from other outlets.
Compensation:
Reported features and artist profiles with 1-2 sources are up to 1,500 words and pay $200.
