To preface the release of their sophomore EP, Toronto-based gothic doomgaze trio Uncaught (in Promise) established a small universe: an early-aughts-era medieval RPG; a staged disappearance at a historic theatre; and four spellbinding tracks. This is Revenge Fantasy.

“Cauterize” opens the 23-minute cryptic reverie, escalated by bells fleeing an unseen force, and grounded by reverberating strings.

Portishead and Angelo Badalamenti meet in “Kismet,” the EP’s mystical second track. Delicate percussion, distorted church organs, and diabolically angelic vocals whisper confessions only the listener is privy to.

Frontwoman Beatrice Douaihy’s hypnotic line, “I’d hex you” defines the third act, “Soft Engineer.” Calling it an earworm would understate the pull of its psychic power.

The finale, “Pendulum,” summons a small choir to complete the saga. Aptly placed transitions introduce new chapters of the dark-wave mystery that deepens through repeated exposure.

Playfully sinister and hauntingly seductive, it doesn’t take long for Revenge Fantasy to become a fixation.
